Deena Levenstein
Deena was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1979. When she was 11, her parents moved the family to Jerusalem, Israel where she ended up living for around 16 years.
During her school years she focused on music (piano, to be exact) but for university she chose a very different direction, acquiring a bachelor of science in nutrition from the Hebrew University. Those years were spent at the lovely, quaint Hebrew U campus in Rechovot.
In between school and university she did one year of sherut leumi (Israeli national service which is the alternative option to army service for girls from Orthodox backgrounds) where she worked with autistic kids. She also spent some time studying Jewish thought and Torah at Nishmat, a yeshiva for women in Jerusalem, before she started university.
It turned out that music wasn’t her greatest passion and neither was nutrition. She has since found her niche in the world of writing, with a focus on Jewish topics and anything connected to Israel.
In 2006 she moved to she moved to beautiful Vancouver, B.C. where she spent three years working within the Jewish community, including writing for the local Jewish paper. She’s now back in Jerusalem – the opposite in many ways to Vancouver – where she’s enjoying the fascinating life of living in such a vibrant, interactive city.
