“While at Rothberg as a graduate student in Spring of 2010 me and my roommate were invited to participate in an undergraduate, 4-day hike through the Galilee over the Passover break. The trip was dubbed Yam-le-Yam (Sea to Sea). We began our journey in the westernmost part, the Mediterranean Sea and headed eastward. During the 4-day trip, we visited mount Miron and the mystic city of Tzfat before arriving at our final destination, Lake Kinneret on the 4th day. This picture was taken in the Upper Galilee, near the Lebanon border. We were hiking all morning and reached a beautiful field, which overlooked the mashavs near Lebanon. We decided to rest there for a few hours before continuing our hike. In the picture are two undergraduate students from Rothberg, Christina (on the right) and Kelly (on the left) enjoying the view.”

Many thanks to all who submitted photos to this year’s contest! Please click here for a photo gallery of all of the runners-up.

Below are his wise words:

I am currently a post-secondary student, and can hopefully shed some light for those up and comers contemplating a post-secondary institution. I went to Uvic for my first year (living on res) then transferred to UBC after as I wasn’t overly happy at Uvic. The way I see it, choosing a school is hard to do because you’re not just choosing a school – you’re choosing a location, a city, and an environment. On top of that, they say it is the people that make the place, and you have to consider the type of personalities attracted to post-secondary institutions, and as well, whether you want to go to a school where you have other friends attending, or, if you want to be a lone wolf out to explore on his own. One must also balance societal expectations with personal expectations with parental wishes. Parental advice is key (and usually comes with much needed financing) but unless you, the student, is happy – others’ joy is irrelevant. So consider all the variables, but in the end, make a decision based largely on your reasoning – and remember nothing is set in stone, if you are unhappy in your school, you can always transfer.

It is Dylan Segal, a sociology student at UBC who aims to become a lawyer. Dylan heard about the Hebrew You competition through a friend of his family who had seen the blog. He wrote a wonderful and very wise piece about what is involved in choosing a school, as well as the importance of being honest with yourself if you realize you’ve made a mistake. Well done Dylan! We hope you enjoy your new ipod video. Below is the winning blog:
