Could this be Jerusalem’s best restaurant?

Locals think it is. They let us into the secret of MahaneYuda, located in the heart of the famous Mahane Yehuda market. Belinda, Lara’s Israeli cousin, told us this was probably in the top 3 of all Israeli restaurants, a unique and unforgettable experience that delivered more than just a culinary feast. But, she cautioned, forget about even trying to get in…the place is booked out every night – months in advance.
Undeterred, we went to work, begging and pleading until at last, they told us we had a table at 6;30 but could not stay 1 second later than 8:30. The second sitting, apparently, goes off! Needless to say we got lost in the mayhem of the market and arrived late, at 7;00. But our table was there, waiting for our party of 7. And we were not to be disappointed.
Aside from the ambience, a unique blend of Israeli and African/Mediterranean cultures celebrated with high energy music and a noise level that will challenge your skill at table conversation, what sets MahaneYuda apart is this: the restaurant is owned by 3 Jerusalem chefs, Asaf Granit, Yossi Elad and Uri Avon, and with a menu that changes every day, the distinct character of each chef is well-represented at each sitting. An open kitchen affords a complete view into how your meal is prepared, and, as in my case, amazement at how anything gets done at all since it looks like complete chaos. But, as some of the pictures will show, the meals come out perfectly – and in good time – and are a wonder to the senses!
As we all know, food is only one component to fulfill an all-round fantastic restaurant experience. When you add creativity in sound and light management and encourage participation from your guests, you have, in my opinion, a formula for a great night out. MehaneYuda chefs, waiters and guests dance on the tables, dance in the kitchen and dance on impulse. It’s that kind of place. We left at 8:30 well-fed, basking in our incredible good fortune at being able to experience something so undeniably Israel, so unforgettably Jerusalem.
